Where should I promote my website?

Are you a business owner who has a website and creates content on a regular basis but just don’t seem to be seeing the benefits of it at all?

You could create content to your hearts content and will more than likely get some traffic from search engines, as long as it’s well written and optimised for the search terms that your audience are looking for, but where should you promote your website in order to reach a wider audience?

There are many places that you can promote your website online.

Let’s start with the obvious

Where can I share my content

The most obvious place would be on social media/networks. This allows you to target those people who have opted to follow your business profiles and have shown their interest in the content that you produce or the products you sell.  These are highly engaged people who are interested in what you have to say and will more than likely be a promising place to start.

Once you’ve done the social media post it can leave a lot of people lost about what to do next. Many will just stop there and not attempt to push their content further.

This is silly because there’s so much more that you can do in order to drive traffic.

Find your audience

First things first, you need to identify places that your audience will be hanging out. Where are the people who don’t already know about you spending their time online?

This is where a bit of digging comes into play.

With many industries, it can be relatively straight forward.

An Example

Let’s say that you own a dog grooming parlour and you’ve posted some content about “quick tips that dog owners can use to ensure that their coats are well maintained”. This is directly interesting to all dog owners.

There are hundreds of dog oriented blogs/forums/facebook groups around the internet.

A quick google search for the term “dog lovers community” turns up over 15million results with the first page full of different communities and blogs.

Now you don’t want to go in and just start posting links everywhere or you’ll get banned before you know it. Integrate yourself into the communities and follow their rules. Many of them will be apprehensive of you just coming on to post a link and leaving. Get involved.

This should drive some good traffic to your website if you spend enough time on this.

Now that you’ve got new traffic coming to your site, you should be converting these visitors into joining your mailing list. That will give you a direct avenue to promote your content to and drum up some repeat business or turn potential customers into paying customers. If you haven’t set up a mailing list subscription option on your site already then you better do it now. You’ll regret it if you don’t.

So that’s:-

  • Social Networks/Media
  • Communities and Blogs
  • Email

Now what?

Get other people to promote your content for you

Why should you be the one to do all the work? I mean you’ve already written a great piece of content and shared it with your audience. Maybe it’s time someone else did a bit of the work.

Including share buttons like those on sumome on your website will allow others to act almost as brand advocates for yourself. Allowing them share your website with their friends, audience and people that you may not already be reaching.

There’s also nothing wrong with asking your audience to share it with others at the end of your post. They either will or they won’t. If they do then great, that’s you just reached new audiences. If they don’t then no big deal. You’ve not lost anything for trying.

This should get you started with promoting your website content and driving more traffic to your website.
